Print media was the only way to get news and information out to a wide group of people. In today’s day we no longer can depend on the newspaper to find our next job, hello indeed, or even our next couch, hello craigslist, offer up, or a myriad of other sites. The truth is people are no longer looking at the paper. Readership is steadily declining even with them attempting to give it away. So the following 5 reasons if the above does not convince you, is why you need to move away today.
- Print media is dead. Everything that we depended on from print media is now accessible, Faster, More interactive, and Free with our phone which is on us at all times. You can download several apps on your phone that will accomplish more for you than a newspaper and it is free. The numbers for subscriptions continue to fall and is down another 8%. The demographic breakdown is also bleak, the main group of readers are retiree’s and the 18-34 demographic is a mere 16% at a 20 year low.
- Newspaper Revenue is down. Research has shown that Craigslist has cost newspapers 5.4 billion from 2000-2007 alone. In fact current revenue models have newspaper revenue at the same as in 1950. With cost of maintaining a large infrastructure and delivery system, while trying to compete with a digital competitor who does not have the same overhead, now wonder newspapers are shutting down.
- Shutting down or decrease frequency: Many papers in order to combat the revenue struggles haveĀ decreased daily deliveries to a few times a week, while others chose to shut down all together. It is estimated that half of the newspapers that existed prior to the internet are now closed.
- The Future is not Bright: In 2016, for the third year in a row, the CareerCast survey of the best and worst jobs in the U.S. reports that a newspaper reporter is the worst career. The job market is decreasing and when this happens talented journalist will find that they can deliver their special skills directly to the consumer. We are seeing more and more Blog and freelance articles coming out everyday. Creating a new way to gain access to the same information.
- Do your kids know what a newspaper is? Ask a kid to find the news for you, or a teenager how they plan on looking for a summer job. Or better yet tell them you are looking for a new Kitchen table. I bet they all reach for their phone, tablet or yours. The future will only provide less and less users. You need to be online to survive.
